5 Tips To Cope With The Fear of Flying

Let me start by saying, I would love to travel the world one day. I have a list a mile long of places where I would love to go. I was just a baby (maybe 2 years old) when I first got on an airplane obviously I don’t remember that experience. However, I was 18 years old the first time I flew by myself. I went to my families country in El Salvador. It was a 5-6 hour flight. Luckily it was a red eye so I mostly slept and I don’t remember much about my travels. Since then I have flown alone, with friends, family members and my husband and no matter what I always get the worst anxiety the day before and during my flight. So here are my 5 tips to cope with the fear of flying.

  1. Remind yourself that everything is going to okay: I always start thinking of the worst case scenario. Instead change your thinking. Think positive thoughts. That little bit of turbulence is like bumps on the road (keep reminding yourself). Also don’t forget to just breath.
  2. Keep your mind occupied: You can play a game on your ipad, phone or computer. Read a book or a magazine that you know you will enjoy and lastly listen to audio books or a podcast. If I do that I like to close my eyes so I can focus on the words that they are saying. Keeping me distracted of the flight.
  3. Essential Oils: I am a true believer in essential oils. I use the lavender touch from Doterra (click here to purchase). I use the roller oil on my wrist, the back of my neck and I breath it in 3 times. Also because of COVID, we have to wear a mask during a flight so I even roll some on to my mask for me to breath in. The best thing about lavender is that helps you relax.
  4. Watch a movie: Who doesn’t enjoy a good comedy movie, watching comedy always puts me in a better place. This will distract you from your flight and put you in a better mood.
  5. Bottoms up: Personally I have to have a drink to calm the nerves. Sometimes a glass a wine is all you need to relax.

Hope these 5 tips help you calm your nerves. I know it’s difficult at times but once you get to your destination that fear becomes insignificant and you will have the opportunity to have new experiences and new memories. Which will then make the flight totally worth it!
